This article is part of my Fundamentals of Personal Finance series. In the initial articles, I share brutal truths that you may not know about money and personal finance. It’s my endeavour that you and your loved ones wake up to the financial reality that is awaiting you.
Most people do not lose money because of bad luck.
They lose it because they believe the wrong things for too long.
I believed these myths too. And they cost me more than I want to admit.
Let me show you the truth I learned the hard way.
🧨 Investing Myth 1: You Need a Lot of Money to Start Investing
Wrong.
I started with tiny amounts. Some months, I only invested the cost of a dinner.
But those small, consistent bets created the habit. The habit created momentum. And momentum created real wealth.
Truth: You do not need more money. You need more discipline.
🧨 Investing Myth 2: Timing the Market Is Everything
Wrong.
I once waited nine months for the “perfect” time to buy a stock I believed in. By the time I bought it, the price had already doubled.
I lost more money waiting than I would have by just entering and holding.
Truth: Time in the market beats timing the market. The perfect moment is a lie. Start now and stay the course.
🧨 Myth 3: Diversification Protects You from Loss
Wrong.
I used to hold twenty different stocks. Most of them I barely understood. When markets crashed, I panicked.
Now I invest in a few strong ideas I understand deeply. I do not spread just to feel safe. I focus to stay strong.
Truth: Over-diversification can be a hidden risk. Conviction matters more than confusion. Often, it’s called as ‘DIWORSIFICATION’
🧨 Investing Myth 4: You Need to Follow the News to Stay Ahead
Wrong.
I used to read every headline. It made me reactive, not informed. Every time a market dipped, I second-guessed myself.
Now I tune out the noise and tune into my strategy.
Truth: The news wants your attention, not your success. Silence is often the best investment filter.
✅ The Real Problem
These myths are not just wrong.
They are dangerous.
They keep you busy.
They keep you scared. And they keep you broke.
🎯 My Thoughts
Wealth is not destroyed by bad markets. It is destroyed by bad beliefs.
Change your beliefs. Change your results.
